Hardwood vs. Composite Decking for Coastal Waterfronts

Choosing between native Australian hardwood and WoodEvo composite decking for coastal environments such as Terrigal and Avoca Beach, with practical guidance on framing, fixings and maintenance.

Answer first

Quick, practical answers.

The short answer comes first. The construction detail and important exceptions follow through the guide.

01

How should this advice be applied to a specific home?

Use it as a planning guide, then check the actual site, product instructions, approvals and construction details before committing to work.

02

Can Wavelength Concepts help with the design as well as construction?

Yes. We can review ideas, measurements, materials and practical detailing, and identify where drawings, engineering, certification or specialist trade input is required.

03

Where does Wavelength Concepts work?

Wavelength Concepts is based in Terrigal and works across the Central Coast, with selected Sydney projects where the scope suits the business.

01

Practical guide

The coastal decking dilemma: hardwood or composite?

Building an outdoor living space on the Central Coast means designing for salt, ultraviolet exposure, wind-driven rain and changing humidity. In Terrigal, Avoca Beach and Wamberal, a durable deck depends on the whole system—surface boards, structure, ventilation, flashings, fixings and realistic maintenance—not the sales description of one product.

The best material is the one that suits the property's exposure, design, expected upkeep and budget after the complete installed system is compared.

02

Technical detail

Native Australian hardwoods: the traditional standard.

High-density Australian hardwoods such as Spotted Gum, Blackbutt and Ironbark offer natural grain, excellent wear characteristics and the ability to be sanded and refinished. Species suitability, bushfire requirements and durability class still need project-specific confirmation.

  • Authentic timber variation
  • Can be sanded and recoated
  • Strong edge and stair detailing
  • Requires regular cleaning and coating inspection

Why it matters

Premium composite systems: lower-maintenance outdoor living.

For owners who want to reduce sanding, staining and oiling, a quality capped composite system can be a strong option. Wavelength Concepts installs products including WoodEvo and sources through established suppliers such as Walker Bros Timber and Swadlings Timber & Hardware.

Composite is lower maintenance, not maintenance-free. Boards still need cleaning, drainage, ventilation and installation to the current manufacturer requirements. Colour change, heat, staining, impact damage and warranty exclusions should be reviewed before selection.

04

Design decision

The concealed structure and fixings still decide service life.

The board cannot protect an inaccurate or waterlogged frame. Joist spacing, treated-timber hazard class, cut-end treatment, joist and bearer protection where compatible, ledger flashings and clear drainage paths should be resolved before decking is fixed.

Corrosion exposure also matters. Grade and material selection for screws, clips, brackets and connectors must suit the documented system and actual site; even stainless steel relies on correct grade, compatible metals, installation and maintenance.

05

Putting it into practice

The practical verdict.

Choose hardwood when you value authentic grain, repairability and the changing character of natural timber—and accept the required cleaning and recoating programme. Choose a quality composite such as WoodEvo when a consistent architectural surface and reduced coating maintenance better suit the household.

For either option, compare complete quotations and current product documents rather than board-only square-metre rates.

  • Hardwood: natural, renewable-looking surface with scheduled upkeep
  • Composite: consistent, lower-coating system with product-specific rules
  • Both: accurate framing, drainage, ventilation and compatible fixings
