A low-maintenance composite deck shaped around the home and the Central Coast climate.
The result was developed around the home, the site and the clients' day-to-day use rather than forcing the project into a standard detail. Material choice, access, structure, water management and the connection to the existing house were considered as one build.

Material choice
Structure, surface and interfaces.
The subframe, board layout, edges, junctions and finishing details were coordinated as one system. Resolving those relationships early produces a cleaner result and avoids individual components competing with one another.

Concealed detail
Ekodeck selected for coastal conditions.
This Terrigal deck rebuild used Ekodeck composite boards, selected for their resistance to rot and splitting and their reduced routine oiling requirements. The site is exposed to moisture, strong sun, leaf litter and coastal air, so the surface and concealed construction both needed to respond to demanding conditions.
Composite decking provides a clean, consistent finish, while the custom Blackbutt balustrade brings natural timber warmth to the completed space.

Site performance
Full demolition and structural rebuild.
The existing deck had deteriorated and no longer provided a sound base for a simple re-deck. Removing the structure allowed the framing, levels and site-specific issues to be corrected rather than concealed beneath new boards.
The replacement framing was built around the sloping site and the requirements of the new deck, improving both structural integrity and the way the outdoor area connected to the house.
Finished result
Protecting the subframe in Terrigal.
Protective measures included flashing tape where appropriate, preservative treatment to exposed timber cuts and end grain, ventilation beneath the deck and fixings selected for exterior exposure. These are small details individually, but together they materially influence service life.
The deck was planned as a complete system: footings and framing, moisture management, board layout, edge details and balustrades all needed to work together.

Blackbutt hardwood balustrades.
Solid Blackbutt supplied locally was used for the custom balustrade, creating contrast against the composite surface. Hardwood is well suited to detailed balustrade work because it provides strength, crisp profiles and natural character when correctly selected and finished.
